Jimena Montserrat
Voice Faculty
Hello! My name is Jimena, and I’m thrilled to join the Houston Voice Studio faculty! I am a passionate singer, vocal technician, and pedagogue, and I am excited to help you discover and refine your unique voice. My teaching philosophy centers around cultivating healthy vocal habits and fostering musical growth, ensuring each student develops a sustainable and resilient technique tailored to their needs. I can’t wait to support your vocal journey and help you grow into the confident performer you aim to be!
With over eight years of teaching experience, I have worked with students of all ages and experience levels, with a focus on adolescent and young adult voices. In my teaching, I prioritize vocal health and technique, exploring fundamental concepts like efficient breath management, registration balance, resonance, and articulation. I emphasize a kinesthetic approach to teaching, helping students engage their body awareness to connect with the technical aspects of singing—whether it’s navigating vowel modification, building stability for belt/mix, or achieving smooth registration transitions. One of my greatest joys as a teacher is helping students prepare for various performances, from school auditions and choral concerts to musical theater productions, and watching them achieve their goals.
I began my singing journey as a young choral singer and started my solo soprano studies at 16. As a performer, I’ve had the privilege of singing in opera, zarzuela projects, and other Hispanic music forms across Mexico and the U.S. Some of my favorite roles that I have performed are Adina in L’elisir d’amore and Zerlina in Don Giovanni. I also really enjoyed singing as a soloist in the Texas Medical Center Orchestra’s “La zarzuela vive!” concert. I’m currently in my second year as a Young Artist with DaCamera of Houston, where I perform in recitals and concerts while working as an artist-teacher in local schools. This experience allows me to bring real-world insights into my teaching practice, emphasizing how singers can integrate performance technique and vocal longevity.
In addition to singing, I have a deep passion for artistic administration and project management. I recently completed an Artistic Administration apprenticeship with the Glimmerglass Festival and am currently interning with Stratagem Artists, a boutique artist management company in NYC. This organizational work fuels my ability to help students organize their practice and approach their vocal goals with structure and precision.
I hold a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Rice University, where I studied the intricacies of classical technique while being supported by Mexico’s National Ministry of Cultural Affairs. My academic background also includes a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Escuela Superior de Música in Mexico City and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Studies from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. I conducted historical and musicological research into contemporary interpretations of classical and early music during my studies. As part of my graduation requirements, I wrote and defended a thesis that focused on XVI century plainchant books and a dissertation that analyzed modern performance practices of Italian opera.
When I’m not teaching, performing, or studying, I’m usually spending time with my cat Pepe, rewatching my favorite TV shows, or connecting with friends and family from afar!
