Andersen White
Voice Faculty
Hello! My name is Andersen, but you can call me Andie! I’m so excited to be a Houston Voice Studio faculty member. I am an enthusiastic and deeply attuned singer, theatrical performer, and proud voice pedagogue. I’m delighted to guide you on your musical journey to finding your unique voice.
As a singing instructor, my main goal is to create a comfortable and nurturing environment for my students to explore their musicality. Whether your passion lies in musical theater, classical music, or contemporary genres, I’m excited to help you develop a strong and sustainable technique while unlocking your full potential as a singer. From refining your registration and mastering belting and mixing to enhancing breath support, I’m here to help you build confidence and hone your vocal skills!
At a young age, I cultivated a love of camaraderie, intensive practice sessions, and performing in a crowd through voice lessons and performance opportunities at Houston’s Bay Area Theatre and Voice Academy. Through the guidance of my mentors, Ben and Relena Luss, I discovered my love for musical theater and, eventually, classical music. Under their tutelage, I performed in over 20 musicals, including Urinetown (Hope Cladwell), The Wizard of Oz (Dorothy), and Shrek the Musical (Dragon). Additionally, I participated in their Advanced Music Preparatory Theater, including completing courses in acting, dance, music theory, and choral classes. In addition to performing locally, I had the privilege of competing at the Junior Theatre Festival and becoming a three-time best performance winner, multi-time best vocal recipient, and won best choreography for my work on their production of Godspell Jr. This performance foundation has shaped my approach to teaching, allowing me to guide students, especially young and inspired singers, with expertise and care.
I received my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Hartford’s The Hartt School, where I studied under Dr. Robert Barefield. I was honored to receive the Kent McCray Opera endowment scholarship. Some of my favorite performances I participated in during my time at The Hartt School include Lori Laitman’s The Three Feathers (Dora), The Merry Widow (Valencienne), Cunning Little Vixen (The Rooster), and one of the soloists in David Macbride’s final work ‘Yantra 9’. Outside of performance, I served as Recording Secretary and eventual President of the Eta Mu chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota. As president, I organized a yearly Benefit concert, raising thousands of dollars for worthy causes such as the International Women’s Health Coalition and the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association. Some of my favorite additional studies include 20th-century music history, German and French art songs, and participating in the Hartt Chorale.
I received my Master of Music in Vocal Performance from The New England Conservatory, where I studied with Dr. Ian Howell, a leader in science-based pedagogy. He was a mentor and the biggest inspiration for my teaching style and philosophy. During my time at NEC, I also performed in Ana Sokolovic’s SVADBA (Lena), Dido and Aeneas (The Spirit), and L’enfant et les sortilèges (Number). In addition to performing, I was devoted to my academic study, retaining a spot on the dean’s list the entire time of my study and participating in additional courses in stage combat, opera stagecraft, and the business of singing. Additionally, I enjoyed working as the stage manager for the undergraduate and graduate opera departments with Steven Goldstein.
Since moving back to Houston, I’ve performed with many Houston-based companies. Most recently, I’ve participated in Opera Leggera’s “From the Page to the Stage,” a musical revue as Tzeitel, Operativo’s production of Gypsy (Tessie Tura), as a soloist with Opera on Tap, and as a soprano soloist with First Presbyterian Church’s Chancel Choir. As a Houston Symphony’s Chorus member, I have performed in productions of Orff’s Carmina Burana, Brahms’ German Requiem, and Poulenc’s Gloria.
When I’m not teaching or performing, I'm spending time with my loved ones, crocheting a cardigan, attending a book club meeting, or updating my extremely detailed nail polish inventory spreadsheet!
